Downfall of AAA Studios

By: Colin Meade & Noah Swingle

In the past few years AAA studios have been on a steady decline and indie studios have been on the rise. This has been caused by AAA studios falling into a formula for making games, there is no creative freedom/soul behind the game. This has lead to the degradation of quality, content, and player interest. Indie games, however, have retained their appeal of remaining unique experiences at a reasonable price.

Our multimedia project will outline the circumstances and get opinions on the industry and games coming out of it. We plan to interview players and developers* into a gain a general consensus on the quality of games. We plan to do a video-interview style or podcast. We plan to get background footage of games, players, and developers. We can do interviews with ambient footage for voice-over section and points where interviews are not available and face-to-face interviews with player-base and developers.*

This is newsworthy because it is relevant to players, as it’s a recent development. Due to unoriginality and lack of creative thinking, AAA studios are losing funding and interest, causing cost-cutting and even some to shut down entirely. AAA studios, in comparison to Indie studios, have less output and spend more money on games. This leads to failure of titles affecting studios more.

Indie games, however, are constantly coming out and providing new experiences to anyone willing to try them. This allows indie studios to have more flexibility and encourages to provide unique experiences. This enables smaller studios to take risks with a higher chance of success.
