MC 327 Multimedia Project Proposal

Caroline Colgan & Olivia Knoedler

Our plan for the Multimedia Project is to examine the overall impact of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour. Specifically looking at how culturally and economically significant of an impact as it moves from nationally to globally. Our finished product will be a short podcast episode attached to an informative write-up with a few visuals included.

The podcast will discuss the economic impact of the Era’s tour by explaining and elaborating on posted statistics. One particular discussion point will be whether or not Taylor’s Era’s Tour saved the U.S. from a recession, due to her creation of jobs needed for the tour, touching on the reported bonuses that Taylor gave to those employees.  In order to add a more down home feeling to our podcast, we plan on finding and interviewing several individuals who attended the concert, and what their experiences were. Some of our questions will include asking about who they were attending with and how that impacted their experience, what type of lodging experience did they have, which city did they see Taylor in, did they feel the need to go all out due to the event, how much did they spend monetarily or time wise on their concert outfit or friendship bracelets, and finally how much were their tickets?

We also want to discuss the cultural impact Taylor Swift has had both prior and during her Era’s Tour. Her impact has reached so far that there is now a college course at Arizona State University on the Psychology of Taylor Swift. Will this be a trend to be seen at several other colleges? To get some first hand information we plan on interviewing Musanda, the head of the Mass Communication Department, as well as Dr. Hicks. Dr. Hicks has a unique perspective on Taylor Swift due to his extreme dislike of her and her following. This will provide a nice counter to the rest of the argument and discussion throughout the podcast.

Other topics of interest we want to explore in this podcast is how Taylor Swift is now having an effect on the Football industry due to her connections with Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce. Another aspect we want to explore is Taylor’s affect on the movie industry. With her release of the Era’s Tour Movie she is shaking up how things are done, going straight to AMC instead of going through a third-party. This could lead to big changes in the movie industry. Especially looking at how quickly the Era’s Tour Film overtook some of the more prominent “blockbuster” movies released this year.

We plan for our podcast to be between 5-10 minutes long. We will discuss the topics listed above at length with several interview sound bites sprinkled in in order to create a human connection to the listener. We want to focus primarily on the impact in Kansas City Missouri, but also exploring impacts in Chicago, Illinois, as well as national and global impacts. We want to use the Maslow Hierarchy of Needs as a way to streamline and formulate our research process in hopes of making it easier to understand.
