MC 327 SAG-AFTRA Strike Proposal Plan

SAG-AFTRA Strike 2023

By Logan Swanner & Peyton Seaman

For our Multi-Media proposal, Peyton and I, Logan, will be doing a podcast talking about the acting strike. We will be specifically discussing how video game actors are often overlooked and a potential strike on their end. We will also be discussing the results/what will happen if the video game acting industry goes on strike. This topic is at a forefront in the news, specifically SAG-AFTRA’s part. While many people know about the strike, they are unaware of the video game actors and the fact that they were just approved for strike. Our podcast will most likely be filmed on a phone through a voice recording app and edited through Adobe Audition. With the final assignment being due November 14th, we’d like to have the podcast filmed by November 7th and be done editing the podcast within the week following.

Our Script will start with an introduction discussing the topic:

Intro music….

Logan: The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes have been a frontrunner in the news for the past few months. While the WGA has finally reached an agreement with the big companies, SAG-AFTRA is still working hard on the picket lines. What most people don’t know is that not all of the acting industry is on strike. The video game industry, the most prominent entertainment industry in the world, is still far from the picket line. Yet, they are inching closer and closer by the day.

Peyton: Hello everyone, thank you so much for tuning into our podcast. I’m Peyton.

Logan: And I’m Logan and this is Small Talk.

Replay intro music.

Peyton: Today we are going to be talking a little bit about the SAG-AFTRA  strike and how video game actors might be affected.

After this intro, we will be continuing the podcast by going into detail about how video game actors differ from tv and film actors. It is important that we touch on how the video game industry is the highest grossing industry, yet their actors don’t make as much as tv and film actors. Then we plan on talking about different games and actors, and what being a video game actor means. This means discussing what motion capture is, voice acting, and how many hours of work goes into making these games vs how much profit they make. We will form the discussion as a conversation talking back and forth about the research we found. We will discuss topics like what a video game actor strike will do, what the negotiations would include, and whether we personally believe they are asking for fair demands. With this topic, we also have the option to interview someone. We could interview one of the theater actors and ask for their opinion on the strikes and whether they think the video game actors should go on strike or not. We could also interview people who play these games, that would no doubt be affected by the strike.

We will wrap up the podcast talking about our personal feelings on whether we think a strike should happen, and what the estimated timeline is for a strike. We will then thank our viewer, tell them to tune in next time, and end the podcast with outro music.

Our story is always subject to small changes, as a strike may happen before we are done filming or editing. In that case, we will update our story as things change and work to have the story as up to date as possible. This story is very newsworthy, as the video game actors deserve better treatment and pay than they are receiving, especially since they are a part of the most profitable entertainment industry.
