Summary/Brainstorm:
The idea behind this collection of photos is to shed light on the small moments students experience while attending university. Late night studying, study groups, naps on campus, favorite study spots, balancing work/school/education life etc. The purpose of this project is to serve as a lens to look deeper into the lives of college students. This allows viewers to take a deeper look at what goes on in young adult lives outside of classes. This could also serve as a visual spectrum to how we all experience life and college differently.
Before taking the photos, we can conduct a couple of forms of research to help direct our vision. One approach is simply asking our peers and university students questions to get to know their lives and meaningful moments that happen outside of class. This allows us to take a personal approach. It opens other perspectives to us instead of looking through the lens of only our own. Another is to simply jst observe around us. On campus, through town and just our daily lives in general. What do we notice in the passing moments? What background activities to see going on?
To start off, we need to pick our “subjects”. Through the process of getting to know our peers, we will take note of different stories that stand out to us. The goal in picking our subjects is to have a display of photos that show a variety of differences and the different lives that are lived amongst peers. So we want to have a diverse group of subjects that allow us to see all different forms of living, culture, study and life habits, etc.
Photography is also very visual, so as you experience it and learn is when your vision starts to enter your head. Coming into this project, scenes I can image shooting to communicate our vision are:
- Groups of friends celebrating a birthday in a dorm/ apartment.
- Religious Practice (Church groups like RCM, in a church,
- Study session in coffee shop
- Events attended on/off campus
- Meetings
Everyone’s life looks a little bit different, allowing us to take a deeper look into their life and how they go about their lives from a week-to-week basis will let us see the extra work that they put in that other people may not see. Usually, the extra work they put in will go towards something more than just themselves. When it comes to Greek life, they could be planning a philanthropy or fundraising event, or even having a meeting about what is going on around them and how they can help serve the community better. We want to take this opportunity to show that Greek life is more than just having fun, it is full of people that want to make the place around us better.
