Immigration Scare- Vrinda Mistry & Noah Klimpel

Relevance, timeliness, proximity, etc. are all factors that make a news article worthy of reading. One such piece of news is the ICE scare that swept through the States recently. International students were told to be careful on campus and not answer any questions being asked by seemingly random people who were probably ICE agents in disguise.

This issue is worth talking about because of what it has become. It started out with deporting criminals but now agents are arresting people to simply fill their quotas. They’ve also been given freedom to raid schools, hospitals and places of worship. Agents are now racially profiling people just to meet the government’s expectations. International students have always had to be on their toes but now even more so. This new policy is unjust and built to create fear. Parents fear their children’s safety in schools and children fear the same which is not an environment kids should be learning in. This is a gross abuse of power which should be taken away.

The labelling of all immigrants as criminals is harmful and baseless. People are scared to even go to hospitals to get treated which might lead to serious health issues within communities. This policy is detrimental to not just immigrants but everyone in the USA. It is highly unethical and biased. A country cannot be run smoothly when a lot of it’s population lives in constant fear. Resources are being drained because of how many agents the government is sending to deport people. This is affecting everyone and I don’t see any benefits. Trump’s policy is problematic, unethical, illegal and unnecessary. One of the most glaring issues is the use of the 1798 Alien Enemies Act, which allows for the detention and deportation of individuals deemed a threat, including legal immigrants. This act was historically used in wartime, but Trump’s administration is applying it to legal immigrants and visa holders, many of whom have no criminal records. Due diligence and process are completely being ignored. Agents are deciding on the criminal status of immigrants just by their race. The fear of your visa being taken will discourage anyone to come to the States which harms the industries relying on immigrants like agriculture, construction, etc. Canada has reported an increase in asylum seekers fleeing the U.S. due to heightened immigration enforcement, straining diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In conclusion, a policy like this will obliterate international relations and harm people of color. The masses need to speak up about this issue and make our concerns known. Racial profiling needs to be left behind and only then can we move forward as a civilization. While immigration reforms may be necessary, these measures are too extreme and not helpful in any way.

We plan to do a social media snackable. A short video in which we will talk about this issue and also interview a few people to get their takes on it. These people will be from different backgrounds and walks of life to get a diverse opinion.
